Mom's Bathroom Makeover . . . Planning Stage

I'm working with my mom on her bathroom makeover.  Since she considered the bathroom the most ugly room in their new-to-them house, she only has one limited view picture of it before she began working on it.  It started out blue . . . various shades of it.  Mom had a fair amount of blue in previous houses over the years so she is royally sick of the color blue.  (pun intended)

The walls:
​The first thing she did was rip off the seashell wallpaper border and the tattered wallpaper.  She was left with beige, blue, and purple patchwork walls.  Now it must be noted here, the walls are literally COVERED in blemishes to the point that it would take an insane amount of  sanding or even replacing the drywall.  Yes, its THAT bad.   She tried to sand and then painted the walls a mustard yellow, using leftover paint from her previous house (my house now).  She was simply trying to get down to ONE color on her walls to tide her over till something better could be done about it.  Umm, not the best decision.  Mustard yellow looks amazing in some applications but NOT in this bathroom.  Can we say, "Baby diarrhea"?  LOL

This highly pigmented color unfortunately just emphasized the wall blemishes.  She borrowed my electric sander and went at the walls.  Still majorly bumpy.  She tried covering spots with spackle and resanding.  Still majorly bumpy.  The walls are beyond her & my expertise levels . . . and patience!  

So.  Mom came up with the idea of shiplap.  We will be buying a few sheets of the cheapest plywood we can buy that has one side sanded.  We will have the store rip them into 6" strips.  We plan to dry fit the boards first so that all boards are cut and ready to install before we sand the cut edges, prime, then paint all the boards.

The vanity:
​Her current vanity is made out of rough plywood and even though it appears to have many coats of paint on it, it hadn't diminished the roughness.  It was simply not worth sanding down and then building over to bring it up to date.  We got a nice oak vanity off of Kijiji for an awesome price.

Her current countertop is . . . blue!  To be honest, I liked the color as it was a soft gray blue and definitely could have been worked with but Mom wanted nothing to do with blue.  Period.  She shopped on Kijiji and found a large section of countertop that had been used for an island and we will be cutting that down to fit on the new vanity.  It is a white carrera marble patterned laminate.  It is beautiful.

The flooring:
She tore off the old flooring as it was very tattered and old.  She was just going to replace the bathroom flooring but I've talked her into carrying the new flooring into the mini hall (which separates the bathroom and master bedroom from the kitchen) and into the kitchen.  One reason being that she hates the kitchen flooring (it has a fair amount of blue in it and its old, too) and I knew she would end up replacing that in the not too far off future.  The other reason being that the house currently has too many flooring types going on.  Each room has one of those metal strips separating the floorings.  The kitchen has sheet vinyl.  The dining room on one side of the kitchen has that oak coloured cheap laminate (probably one of the first they produced . . . you know the kind) and the other side of the kitchen is the living room which has real oak hardwood floors.  The office opens off of the kitchen, is totally separate from any other room, and it has the cheap laminate.  Then, you have the mini hall and master bedroom with the cheap laminate.  The bathroom was another completely different vinyl tile flooring.  

The house, being older, has uneven floors and they squeak as well.  Mom & Dad, neither of them, can stand the squeaks so they will be fixing that.  However, levelling the floors would be another whole ball game.  Therefore, the best option to go with in this house is sheet vinyl.  Mom & I went in town on Monday to shop for flooring and found 'the one' at the first place we stopped into.  ​The next step is to get the installers out for a quote.

The design:
Mom loves a mix of Joanna Gaines' style with some primitive and traditional elements.  I had quite a challenge in marrying those styles together in her new bathroom makeover due to the new carrera marble laminate countertop.  That carrera marble look is modern, and Mom isn't into that look.  However, I have pulled it off and we both are quite excited with the plan.  I did a mock-up of what it should resemble when the renovations are completed.
