From this: To this: And now this . . . so far: What is going on?? Well, Mom & Dad took most of the shrubs while we were away at the beach on vacation. Seriously? LOL Yup! I told them to! They were ready to plant shrubs in front of their new place and these types of shrubbery was what they were going to go out and buy. Since these were not my personal taste in shrubbery, it just made more sense for them to take 'their own' mature shrubs. (remember, this was their house until we moved in in February of this year) I took advantage of the end-of-season sales in the garden centres and purchased 3 Dense Yews for in front of the living room windows and a Limelight Hydrangea Standard for in-between the bedroom windows. I'll be getting either a Bobo or a Little Lime (baby versions of the Limelight) for under the star & house numbers area. I spoke to a guy at John's Garden Centre in Riverview and got a ton of helpful information. I love boxwoods but chose yews instead for two reasons. One, they grow a lot faster (to fill in much quicker) and are less expensive to buy size for size. They can be shaped into whatever shape you want just like cedars and boxwoods, also. I knew I wanted a tree-type for in-between the bedroom windows but it also needed balance look-wise, so I chose the Limelight Hydrangea Standard. They start out a light lime green then turn white and have a long blooming season. Here's some pictures to show what this type of tree and shrubs will look like when they are mature. The last remaining green shrub you see in the middle picture of the front of my house is another bridal wreath shrub like the one by the lamp post. My husband & I moved the little one over across the post from its big brother. They were both planted at the same time originally but the little one in the bed didn't like living there, I guess. I will trim the 'big brother' down to match the little guy later on this fall.
On the side of the house next to the baby barn is some lilies and hostas. I will be giving the lilies away and dividing the hostas up and spreading them out to create a neater more uniform bed along there. I prefer lilies in an indoor bouquet, not growing in my outdoor beds. I'm a crazy lady, I know! LOL Next year, I plan to refinish the main beds. They need the rocks to be all raked out and new material laid to prevent weeds before re-spreading the rocks. I also plan to space out the patio blocks, leaving a couple inches between each one for the rocks to lay in. Finally, I plan to add 4x4 lumber all around the edges, squaring it off and giving the whole thing nice clean lines. Those, of course, will be stained to match the shutters. (Why 4x4 instead of the traditional smaller landscape ties? It is cheaper to use 4x4 instead of double the landscape ties to get the same height.) At that time, I will decide whether or not to add a fairly large rock for decorative purposes right under each bedroom window to fill that area in. Or, I may choose to add some low-lying green plant of some kind . . . maybe ornamental grasses. Thats my landscaping story for now. I now have an interest in developing a green thumb!
