 Chalk-Tique was developed by Julie Howard Crozier, the daughter of the man who founded and owns Howard Products. It is a powder that you mix with any brand of paint to make it a chalk paint! The purpose of chalk paint is that in most cases you do not have to sand or prime your product before beginning to paint! It will adhere to any clean and dry surface. I heard about this product from my boss at the Benjamin Moore retail store I work part-time at. She had seen it at a booth at a show in Las Vegas. I was instantly intrigued. I could make my favorite paint (Benjamin Moore) into a chalk paint? I was sold. So even before my boss committed to ordering this product into our store, I bought this off another Benjamin Moore retailer! Since purchasing it, we now carry at Trinity Style Centre, A Benjamin Moore store here in Moncton, NB. Why my interest in chalk paint when I'm clearly so sold on our Benjamin Moore Advance paint for furniture? Well, its all because of some other diy bloggers that are chalk-painting upholstery!!! Last week I purchased a little child's recliner off of our local Kijiji for just $20. Its in excellent shape but pink! I knew this would be the perfect thing to try out this chalk paint on. So now to the real details. The instructions say to use one scoop of powder (scoop included with product) per 1/4 cup of water and mix until smooth, then add 2 cups of your choice of paint. I did exactly that. I used Benjamin Moore (surprise, surprise!) Aura Matte in the color "Willow", which is my leftover paint from my wainscotting. Then, I added 2 1/4 cups of water and mixed that all together. I was left with brown water, quite literally! I figured I must have messed it up big time but decided to try it like that and see how it went. I followed what this blogger did here: http://bella-tucker.com/2013/04/painting-fabric-with-annie-sloan-chalk-paint/ I filled a spray bottle with water and sprayed down the portion of the chair I would be working on a time. Then, painted that portion! Its amazing at how easy painting fabric is! Fun, actually! Messy, yes. Definitely use a drop cloth.
Tuesday (yesterday), I took a fine sanding block to the entire chair and the softness came right back. I just basically run the sanding block over it. Nothing too vigorous. You can see what it looked like after that light sanding, in the picture below.   To the left: the chair after the second coat of paint yesterday (Tuesday) Today, I have to get everything ready to go camping at the beach with the kiddos so I don't have time to work on the chair. Thats HARD! So far, I'm pleased with the results. With this chair, where it was plush, I want to retain that as much as possible so thus the sanding in between each coat. I am hoping to NOT do wax or anything to it. Thats my hope, anyway. At this point, its definitely not pink anymore but you can see the original striped effect. Because I know there was a blue stripe in it, I can still see it. But really, its not blue anymore. I think its just stuck in my head. LOL I've already purchased my next project. I got a french provincial sofa and matching chair off kijiji that is in PERFECT shape. The only flaw is that the upholstery is outdated and ugly. So, I will be chalk painting that, but no sanding in between coats, and I will be waxing that one when its done so as to create that leather-like finish. Its gonna be gorgeous and FOR SALE.
