Logan's Room Makeover

Logan's room was your typical messy boy's room.  Since he really didn't care, I left his room until the end.  Well, the 'end' has come!  LOL

I didn't realize I didn't have a better, more recent picture of his room until I went to do this post.  So I will describe his room as it was.
His walls were painted by the builder with Sherwin Williams paint in the colour "Bagel".  He had a cheap old melamine oak-look bookcase and matching chest of drawers.  The bookcase did get replaced about a year or so ago with a melamine espresso 6 cube organizer.His paternal grandparents got Logan a rough pine bed built.  I had this rustic-look room in mind right from the start and didn't want an ordinary ready-made bed.  He had a collage frame above the cubicles and a gun rack/cabinet above his chest of drawers upon which he hung his toy guns and antlers, etc.  That was basically it.

I began working on his room about a month ago.  I bought a gallon of Benjamin Moore Eco Spec eggshell paint, a mistint, and played with the colour tinting until I liked it.  I painted his whole room this 'special colour'.

I shopped on Kijiji for a quilt for his bed, as he only had a thick plush camo blanket that we used for a bedspread.  Happily, I found a queen size reversible quilt that came with 2 shams, 2 lamps, and a couple decorative accessories for only $50!


I got that large wooden medallion at Target.  It is the only thing I paid full price for and splurged on.  I tried to come up with a different plan for that wall but kept coming back to the medallion so I showed Ryan it and he told me to go ahead and get it!  Yay!  It's PERFECT!  (And yes, its centred on the wall, although in this picture it doesn't look that way.  LOL)

The window blinds are Graber Wood Blinds in Espresso.  I got them during the recent sale where I got the cordless option free!  Its a long story, but I ended up getting the blinds free.  I will share that story when I post about Emma's room.


The tree art I had bought a year or more ago at Home Sense and hadn't hung it anywhere yet.

The decor above his bed is actually the last thing I did in his room!  I made the pictures out of paint stir sticks.  I used a mix of paints I already had plus a couple of dollar store craft paints and mixed them till I got the colours I wanted.  Then I watered the paint down and brushed it on the sticks, immediately wiping off the wet excess with paper towel to create a stained effect.  The black ones are actually stained with stain leftover from the other projects.  The frames were frames I found in storage that I wasn't using.  I sanded them to distress them and make them look rustic.  I only kept the actual frame and the board backing (which I glued the sticks to).  After I had them all together (using strong liquid glue and a handsaw), I sprayed them with a clear coat.  The wooden letters I already had.  They were painted green so I spray painted them with Rustoleum bronze spray paint.  To hang them, I used the stickers from the package of Command hooks I had in a drawer.


The little bedside table on the right, I bought at Wicker Emporium during a big sale for only $39.99.  It came with the baskets!  The bedside table on the left is custom made by Grammie's Attic in Berry Mills.  I thought I needed 3 of them for my living room and only needed 2 so this one was being stored in the basement going unused.  I used Minwax Wood Conditioner (following the directions on the can) on it followed by 2 coats of Minwax Wood Stain in Ebony.  I did the same for his bed, only with one coat of stain, instead of two.

I bought select pine boards at Home Depot ($20) and stained them with Minwax Wood Stain in Ebony, without conditioning them first nor sanding nor anything.  I got the idea and directions for how to build wall book shelves off of Pinterest.  I bought eight 1" x 3" x 24" boards and four 1" x 2" x 24" and made four shelves!  That was fun and simple . . . just nailing them together, putting two picture hangers on the backs and voila!

The chest of drawers that Logan had was cheap melamine and I so when I found this dresser on Kijiji for $40, I nabbed it.  This one is antique, solid construction and so will last him a very long time.
I gave it a light sanding all over, then rolled on a coat of Stix primer.  I just used cheap Dollarama roller & tray so I could throw them out after.  I had to let that dry/cure overnight then I was able to give it a coat of Benjamin Moore Advance in Satin finish in a custom Deep Espresso colour.  This being my second project using this paint, I decided to use a Wooster Velvet Flock mini roller instead of a brush and I LOVE the results!!  Each coat of this paint has to be let dry overnight.  I should have only needed to give it two coats but due to a stupid mistake I made on the top which required extra sanding, I ended up having to do a third coat.  The drawer hardware is original, I just spray painted with Rustoleum bronze spray paint.  The chest of drawers looks amazing!!!  And, I have at least half a quart of paint leftover for another project!

This was fun project, making this buck head art.  I worked on that over a day or two as I was designing it as I went.  I used a 18" x 24" canvas that I had and double wrapped it with burlap I bought at Michaels.  I created the pretty centre framed piece with paint stir sticks individually stained with various stains, hand-sawed and glued onto the frame's backboard.  I sanded the frame to distress it and then sprayed a clear coat over the whole framed art.  The buck head was a chrome piece I had bought at Home Sense several months ago knowing I would get to use something like that somewhere sometime.  I sprayed it with bronze spray paint.  The little wooden squares I bought in the clearance section at Michaels and stained them and glued them on.  I am quite proud of how it turned out!
