2017 was another busy year for A Fresh Perspective! Take a scroll with me back through the year and see the accomplishments. Most of this will have links to blog posts but some do not. I am embarrassed to say that I did not get everything blogged about. In My Own Home: January started out with a closet makeover. I was frustrated with my family never (hardly ever, LOL) hanging up their jackets and putting away their footwear so I tried to do something about it. The closet is the first thing you encounter when you enter my house but my family preferred to walk in and leave their jackets on the nearest chair . . . and kick off their footwear wherever they wanted to. You know the drill, I'm sure.
My husband & I installed white subway tile backsplash in our kitchen! It was our first time doing tile and it really wasn't that hard to do, we were surprised to discover! Click on the picture to read the details. The floating shelves I made in 2016 unfortunately were not sturdy enough to hold any weight and were drooping forward on the wall. You see, we only had one stud to screw into. So, we reinforced behind the wall where there wasn't a stud to screw into, and built brand new floating shelves. Super sturdy this time! I redesigned the look, too, and I like them so much better.
I refinished my table and chair set this year, also. Although the upholstery is complete, I do have to redo the paint job on the chairs & table legs as the paint used did not hold up. I love how the table top turned out in looks but the top coat I used did not protect the finish so I have to redo that as well. Anyway, it looks good enough in pictures that you can see my vision for it all. I will be doing a blog post once I have it all refinished again. I built the bench back and installed it on the wall. When I need the seat part of the bench at the table, I just have to pull it over. The back stays on the wall. Again, another double-duty build that I am proud of. Check out all of the black & white buffalo check! I LOVE it! Mom made my window valances with the leftover fabric. Check out the really cool (at least I think so!) light fixture we diy-ed in the fall. I say 'we' because although it was my idea, it took my husband and my father to install it. They were NOT happy with me about it as it was really difficult. Another one that I haven't done a blog post on it yet, but plan to. I repainted my living room also. Although I liked the green I had done in November 2016, I found that the look it created in my living room did not blend well with the look in the kitchen/dining room. So, I used CIL/Dulux color Beachcomber and using Dulux Diamond Matte paint, I repainted my living room and continued the color down the hallway. I also got to do a little bit of work in the bathroom. I removed the old brass cabinet hardware and soaked it in vinegar/water/baking soda overnight. Then I scrubbed it with an old toothbrush and rinsed well. I sprayed on a coat of BIN primer before finishing off with Krylon Dual spray paint in satin black. I also did the towel rack the same way. Its now been a few months and all is holding up excellently. I painted the wall in the bathroom a CIL/Dulux color called Wood Smoke, using Dulux Diamond Matte paint. Out with the old and in with the new! I will be working on adding some wall decor in here in 2018. Note the wallpaper 'wainscotting' in the hallway, which you can see through the bathroom doorway in one of the pictures above. It was a gift from my mom. It is textured and looks like real wood.
For exterior projects around my house, the privacy fence by the pool finally got stained at the end of summer. My oldest daughter came and did that for me. I so appreciated getting that knocked off the to-do list.
At My Mom & Dad's House: I did a few things at my Mom's house this past year, as well. First up is the kitchen island I made for her. I used the bottom half of a traditional china cabinet, added the beadboard backing, trim, corbels, and built the countertop out of a solid wood door. Below each picture is a link. The first one is a link to the actual blog post. The second is a link to the Hometalk post I did that got lots of attention. I also painted her dining room/entry and did some decor builds/makeovers for her. It turned out so pretty! And the last thing I did in 2017 at my Mom's house was to paint her living room and help her choose a new area rug. She plans to have me paint her fireplace, etc., here in a few months so I will do a post all about the living room then. For Clients:
99.9% of the time, I do not get before & after pictures of my client's homes. However, I do have one to share with you this year! As a result of a colour consultation at a local lady's home in the spring, I was also hired to paint the ceiling & walls of her living room. Here are a view before & after photos. I did many furniture & home decor makeovers this year for resale. Click on each picture to be taken to its blog post.
In closing: I did a mood board post, showing you another virtual room makeover, as a sample of what I can offer for distance decorating services. I also did a couple of informational posts. See those links here below. I want to thank each and every one of you that took time to subscribe, comment, like my Facebook pages, give likes and comments on my Facebook posts, and even for reading my blog posts to begin with. YOU are the reason I blog!
I plan to start some new & exciting things in 2018, beyond my normal written blog posts. I can't wait to share them with you all!
